Upgrade your boiler and central heating
If you want to save energy and money, the single best thing you can do is upgrade your boiler and central heating system
Even if your current gas boiler still works, if it was installed before April 2005, it will be substantially less efficient than today's energy-efficient boilers.
Since April 2005, it has been a requirement that all new boilers installed are of the high-efficiency, condensing type. If your boiler was installed before this time, then it is a standard-efficiency, non-condensing boiler and therefore substantially less efficient.
Cut your energy bills - save up to £1,500 on your gas fuel bills over the next 5 years
Replacing an old gas boiler with an A-rated, high-efficiency, condensing boiler and improving your heating controls could reduce your heating bill by as much as £300 a year (source: the Energy Savings Trust) and will significantly cut your home's carbon dioxide emissions. This estimate is based on installing a new, A-rated, condensing boiler and full set of heating controls in a gas-heated, semi-detached home with three bedrooms.
With gas prices rising on a regular basis, the quicker you change and improve your home energy efficiency, the more money you’ll start to save – and the more impact you’ll make on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
New boiler controls offer more savings
According to Energy Saving Trust figures, installing a thermostat in one room will save almost twice as much energy (£70 per year) as switching off lights and appliances when not in use (£43 per year). In addition, the latest controls (thermostat) that come with your new boiler are far more accurate and sensitive than previous non-digital controls and so not only allow you to control heating to a more comfortable level but also give you greater control over your energy usage.
Increase your warranty period - peace of mind
In addition, all new boilers installed by RJS Heating come with a minimum of 5 years warranty and, with some boilers, up to 12 years. This means added peace of mind and, in the unlikely event of a breakdown, parts and labour are all covered. See boiler warranty and guarantee.
House extensions
Another reason for upgrading your central heating is if you are currently extending or remodelling your house. We can assess your current central heating system and recommend the best solution for providing additional heating to the new areas of your home. See house extensions.
What makes an energy-efficient boiler?
All modern boilers are now 'A'-rated, high-efficiency, condensing boilers. All well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, but they inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler burns fuel much more efficiently because it has a bigger heat exchanger, enabling it to recover more heat, send cooler gases up the flue and use the waste heat in the flue gases to pre-heat the cold water entering the boiler, so making it a more efficient boiler.
They are called condensing boilers because sometimes the flue gases get so cool that the water vapour in the gas produced during combustion is condensed into water and, when this happens, even more energy is recovered from the condensing vapour and the efficiency gets higher still.
